Featured Teardrop: Perkgana

Some teardrop owners or soon-to-be owners are willing to pay a fair amount of money for a custom designed teardrop trailer. With the Perkgana teardrops by designer Mauricio Narvarte of Utah, you won't have to mortgage your house for your teardrop. His beautiful designs start at around $5,690 and Perkgana even has DIY kits available for only $3,890.

The Perkgana teardrops include the 8x5, 1,100 lb. L'escargot and the 7 foot by 48 inch, 550 lb. Hedgehog. L'escargot comes with a full electrical package in the galley and interior, a cargo basket, two doors and a queen mattress. The smaller Hedgehog comes with a single door and window, 14 inch tires and a simple interior. If you need a little more space and clearance, the Hedgehog XC is 60 inches wide and comes with a cargo box, 15 inch tires, a 5 inch foam mattress and LED underbody lights.

The Perkgana DIY kit includes everything you need to build your camper (excluding the Northern Tool trailer). Two models are available (a 48 inch wide body or a 60 inch wide body) and all parts are precut and pilot holes are provided. No cutting or measuring is required and all you need are a few hand tools.

Do It Yourself RV

If you want to build your own teardrop trailer, check out the website, Do It Yourself RV for some inspiration, step-by-step instructions and examples of how many different handmade teardrops are on the road. Check out Larry's teardrop, made from recycled materials. His guide comes with explanations for each step. For other trailer ideas, do a search for "teardrop trailer" on the site.

Not only does the website have home built teardrop trailers, but it includes small trailer and campers and some great ideas on how to make your own vehicle more camp ready. For example, Joe and Eric of Minnesota wanted to take a break from work and travel the U.S. They outfitted the back of their SUV with a wooden storage area that looks very much like a teardrop galley.

The site also has news and information on how to RV full time, how to back up and tow a trailer, RV gear, fun vintage photos, and modifications to commercial trailers and campers.

Teardrop Trailers on Makezine and Instructables

There are tons of teardrop trailer plans and schematics on the web, and because of the popularity of DIY, many of these home built trailers been showing up in Make Magazine and the handy step-by-step site, Instructables. 

While these types of sites don't take the place of a well drawn plan, they are a handy tool to see the process and final project. What's also great about these plans is that the trailers have already been built by the owners and they are sharing not only the visual steps they took to build the trailer, but also what issues they run into, how they purchase their supplies and any links they found to be helpful.
